Chemaly & Company was founded by corporate advisors following the rising need of this type of specialists in the Middle East and North Africa.
The founders and members have worked for major companies in different industries and in different capacities, as in-houses or external consultants.
They are postgraduates in law and management from reputable universities.
About the Founding Partner:
Joseph Chemaly is a member of the Beirut Bar Association since 1970 and has more than 40 years of experience. He graduated in law from the Saint Joseph University (USJ) in 1969.
His main practice areas are corporate law, admiralty law and insurance law.
He has handled, and still, matters in the above mentioned areas respectively as follows:
Corporate Law: incorporation and advisory on corporate matters.
Admiralty Law: marine litigation, arrests and releases of vessels, vessels mortgages, conclusion of charter-party agreements between shipowners and charterers (and sub-charterers); representation P&I Clubs, foreign and local major companies, charterers and maritime agencies.
Insurance Law: advisory services on policies regarding hull, machinery and cargo.
litigation: marine lawsuits between shipowners and cargo owners, recovery of claims for insurance companies and consignees, bankruptcy.
In 1973-1974, Joseph Chemaly was assigned by the major local insurance companies the legal translation of vehicle insurance policies that were later adopted on the national level.
In 2000-2005, he handled a defense on behalf of a shipowner against insurance companies representing 32 indemnified merchants, following a vessel collision in the Aegean sea causing a total loss of cargo. He led the litigation through talks and negotiations, reaching an amicable settlement for which he defined the terms.
